Professionalism in Medicine
Medicine’s privileged position is said to result from a bargain between medicine and society the basis of which is professionalism. Professionalism aspires to Altruism, Accountability, Excellence, Duty, Service, Integrity, and Respect for others. Using professionalism vignettes and models of developing professionalism we will explore what professionalism is, what it is not, and how best to develop and maintain it.
Duration: Half-day
Methods: Interactive lecture and demonstration supported by visual and auditory aids. Group participation in a series of professionalism exercises.
Suitable for: Medical students, FY 1 & 2, ST1-ST7, SAS doctors, Consultants.
Objectives: Attendees will learn the importance of professionalism in honouring the position of medicine in society and also in maintaining the profession’s autonomy. Time will be spent defining professionalism in medicine, identifying those qualities patients regard as being indicative of professionalism in their physicians, and how best to approach the process of developing professionalism in medical practice.
